Barton History



Barton College is a private liberal arts college located in Wilson, North Carolina. Barton College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, The NC Association of Colleges and Universities; the NC Department of Public Instruction; the NC Board of Nursing; and the Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association.

Barton College was founded in 1902 by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) under the former name of Atlantic Christian College. Through its Division of Lifelong Learning, Barton College opened eastern North Carolina's first full-time Weekend College in the fall of 1990. The official college motto is Habebunt Lumen Vitae - “They shall have the light of life”. The namesake of the College is Barton Warren Stone, founder of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In 1990 Atlantic Christian College changed its name to Barton College.

There are currently 1,189 students on campus, with an average 11:1 student-faculty ratio.

In August 2006 Barton College was named a "Best Southeastern College” for 2006 by Princeton Review.(Wikipedia)
